Loyola Marymount University (https://www.lmu.edu) invites participation in the Biennial Marketing and Public Policy Research Workshop and Doctoral Seminar that will take place on the LMU Campus during the week immediately prior to the AMA Marketing and Public Policy Conference (MPPC). MPPC will take place at the Marina del Rey Marriott, a short distance from the Campus. On May 28 – 30. The LMU campus is a short 15 – minute taxi ride from Los Angeles International Airport.
The workshop is an intensive four-day biennial workshop where young scholars meet, learn from and work with senior scholars from disciplines such as marketing, economics, psychology, risk assessment, decision theory, and public policy. The workshop is intentionally kept small to provide ample opportunity for interaction and mentorship among the resident scholars, invited scholars and the fellows. The workshop is open to doctoral students (typically in their third year of study or latter) and junior faculty members early in their career who have an interest in research at the intersection of marketing and public policy. The workshop will also accept a limited number of more senior faculty members who are interested in making a transition of their scholarship to focus more on public policy issues.
The Workshop fills a gap in doctoral education. Few doctoral programs offer courses in marketing and public policy, yet many students and faculty have a keen interest in delving into the tough social issues through their research. The Workshop provides an opportunity for students to learn with faculty from different universities and different disciplines. This creates a foundation for students and faculty to collaborate with scholars in different fields as well as at different universities and federal regulatory agencies and establishes a network of
The workshop will begin with an opening reception on the evening of May 25 and conclude at mid-afternoon on May 28 to provide time to travel to the MPPC venue, which is about 15 minutes away.
Fellows will be assigned pre-workshop readings and be expected to develop an idea for a research proposal so that they: 1) come prepared to be actively involved in the presentations and discussions among the invited and resident scholars and 2) leave with a concrete plan for future research. Throughout the workshop, the resident and invited scholars. as well as the other fellows provide feedback on the research ideas.
The registration fee for doctoral students is $ 100. The registration fee for faculty members is $300. This registration fee covers housing, meals, and snacks during the workshop. Housing will be provided on the LMU campus (double occupancy) on the nights of May 25 – May 27. Through the generosity of workshop sponsors, a limited number of travel grants ($100-200) are available that may be used to defray travel costs.
Applications for participation in the workshop are due by March 1, 2020. Our intention is to accommodate as many participants as possible. Please contact one of the chairs about special circumstances.
