Editors' Perspective: Rajdeep Grewal on the Journal of Marketing Research

The Journal Selection Committee, chaired by the VP of Publications, Rajan Varadarajan, has selected Dr. Rajdeep Grewal (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) as the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the Journal of Marketing Research(JMR). Dr. Grewal will serve from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2020. His editorship will be reflected in the journal masthead for issues published for a four-year period from January 2017 to December 2020.

The EIC at JMR is assisted by a team comprising of Co-Editors (CoEs), Associate Editors (AEs), and members of the Editorial Review Board. Dr. Grewal has invited Dr. Sachin Gupta (Cornell University, Ithaca) and Dr. Rebecca Hamilton (Georgetown University, Washington DC) to serve as CoEs, along with more than 40 leading scholars in the discipline to be the AEs for a two-year term, from July 2016 through June 2018. The Editorial Review Board (ERB), comprised of 140 emerging and leading scholars in the discipline, will also serve for this same 2-year period.

The EIC will be advised by members of the Advisory Board of JMR on matters pertaining to the strategic management of the journal. The eight member advisory board is comprised of Pradeep Chintagunta (University of Chicago), John A. Deighton (Harvard University), Tulin Erdem (New York University), Joel Huber (Duke University), Donald R. Lehmann (Columbia University), Gary L. Lilien (Pennsylvania State University), Mary Frances Luce (Duke University), and Russell S. Wine (New York University).

Manuscript Management Process

All articles should be submitted to the EIC (Rajdeep Grewal) for initial processing. Based on the article’s substantive domain, workload of the CoEs, and other factors, the EIC may assign the article to a CoE for processing. The assigned editor — whether the EIC (Dr. Grewal) or a CoE (Dr. Gupta, Dr. Hamilton) — will process the manuscript and decide whether to desk reject the manuscript (often in consultation with an AE) or to assign it to an AE. Once a manuscript is assigned to an AE, the EIC or CoE will seek feedback from the AE on an appropriate review team. The reviewers will then be assigned based on AE suggestions, workload of the reviewers, and author suggestions. The reviewers are asked to provide their feedback and make their recommendation. The AE will then take the reviewers’ feedback and recommendations into consideration and write a report and make a recommendation to the EIC/CoE processing the manuscript. The EIC/CoE will arrive at a decision based on thie cfeedback and recommendations from the AE and reviewers.

Rajdeep Grewal on Getting Your Paper Accepted to Journal of Marketing Research

​​A manuscript decision involves the following categories: Desk Reject, Reject, Reject-Resubmit, Risky Revision, Revision, Conditional Accept, and Unconditional Accept.  A Reject decision implies that the manuscript will no longer be considered for publication at JMR. A Reject-Resubmit decision implies that a revision will be considered, but it will be treated as a new submission with either a new review team or at least a partial turnover in the review team. A Risky Rrevision usually implies that the manuscript has potential but a path to publication is not readily apparent. A decision to Invite Revision implies that a clearer path to publication is evident, while Conditional Acceptance implies that the manuscript can be accepted for publication if a some minor conditions are met.

Rajdeep Grewal: Advice to Authors in the Review Process

All revised manuscripts are typically handled by the same review team, barring any unforeseen circumstances that might lead to a change in the review team.

JMR strives to provide feedback in a timely manner. Reviewers typically have 30 days to complete their review, AEs have two weeks to complete their AE report, and the EIC/CoEs craft their decision within two weeks. Unless a paper is desk rejected, the goal for turnaround time for a manuscript is expected to be approximately 75 days from the first submission to initial decision.
