O-1 Visa Consultation Letter Request

As a member benefit, the AMA offers peer group advisory opinion letters for United States O-1 Visas. O-1 Visas are issued to individuals of extraordinary ability to work in the United States.

Requests are only honored for active AMA members who meet the requirements. If you wish to receive a letter and do not have an active membership, you can click below to join.


Criteria for Approval

  • To qualify for an O-1 visa, you must demonstrate extraordinary ability by sustained national or international acclaim.
  • Extraordinary ability in the fields of science, education, business or athletics means a level of expertise indicating that you are one of the small percentage who have risen to the very top of the field.
  • A consultation letter from a U.S. peer group, labor organization, and/or management organization is generally required for O visa petitions.
  • Refer to the “Application Process for an O-1 visa” tab on this page which has a discussion about submitting consultation letters.

This is not an exhaustive list, and an individual doesn’t need to meet all criteria. 

  • Publications in AMA journals or other well-known marketing journals
  • Publications in Marketing News or other well-known business periodicals (e.g. HBR, SMR, Fast Company, etc.) on the subject of marketing
  • Quotations or references in either academic or business publications that recognize you as an authority in marketing
  • Speaker, presenter, or panelist at an AMA conference or other well-attended marketing conference
  • Instructor for AMA training classes or other well-known marketing training provider.
  • A job title associated with full-time employment that is indicative of a successful career and a high level of achievement
    • Examples of professional titles: CMO, EVP, SVP, or VP Marketing.
    • Examples of academic titles: Full Professor, Endowed Chair, Department Head, Dean, Provost
  • Recipient of an award from AMA or other well-known organization (e.g. 4 under 40, Higher Ed Marketer of the Year, Parlin Award, Berry Book Award, etc.)
  • Evidence of a track record of significant accomplishments in the field of marketing
  • Evidence of a large number of followers on social media, and a track record of regularly posting marketing-relevant content
  • Long-standing membership in the AMA (5 years+)
    • Must be an active Academic or Professional member at the time of the request
  • Completion of AMA certifications (PCM®)
  • Holding a high-level volunteer position within the AMA or similar organization (e.g. chapter president or executive board, SIG president, journal editor or associate editor, council member, board member)

The individual’s request should include specifics associated with the evidence provided, e.g. dates and titles of publications, speaking engagements, awards received, certifications earned, or volunteer leadership positions.

You will receive a response within 4-5 business days. If your application is approved, you will receive a payment link for the $249 processing fee. Once the fee is paid, you will receive the peer group advisory letter as a PDF file on official AMA letterhead within 4-5 business days.
