Consumer electronics top the list of Amazon searches in the run-up to holiday shopping

Consumers are on the hunt for the best holiday gifts, ramping up their online searches. Marketing intelligence company Hitwise dug into what may be some of this season’s biggest sellers by looking at some of the top searches and top products on Amazon.

“As to be expected, many Amazon shoppers were searching for games and gaming consoles last week,” Hitwise reported, as of its Nov. 12 report. “Perennial favorites like Bluetooth headphones, laptops and tablets were also in high demand. TV searches overall may have remained flat on Amazon this week, but several TV products and devices were among the fast movers last week.”

Top searches as of mid-November, per Hitwise, include:

Nintendo Switch (0.12% of the search share).

Laptop and headphones (0.06% of the search share each).

Bluetooth headphones, Xbox One X, tablet, Christmas decorations and TV (all with a 0.05% search share).

Fitbit and PS4 (0.04% search share each).

More consumers visiting Amazon product pages can also be telling as to what the big holiday seller could be. “Visits to product pages can indicate even stronger purchase intent than searches — these visitors clicked through to particular product in order to read specs, customer reviews or even to purchase the item in question,” Hitwise says.

The top five product pages for the week ending Nov. 12 were:

  • Nintendo Switch with 762,965 visits.

  • Fire TV Stick with 571,393 visits.

  • Xbox One X ITB Limited Edition Console with 523,822 visits.

  • Echo Dot - Black with 518,702 visits.

  • d-CON No View, No Touch Covered Mouse Traps with 480,556 visits.

While mouse traps likely won’t be a hot gift this holiday season, Hitwise says searches for mouse traps have more than doubled since June and are currently at a three-year high.
