Retail in the age of global uncertainty: The impact of the macro-environment on the retailspace and vice versa
Special Issue
If disruption is and was already creating havoc in retailing, the current global dynamics are adding yet another layer of complexity, disrupting forward planning. Political uncertainty combined with the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic is leading to double-digit inflation levels, labor shortages, and continued supply chain disruptions. Compounding these disruptions are the increasingly visible signs and implications of climate change. Thus, the combination of price pressure, labor shortages, and new sustainability urgencies creates a level of uncertainty that defines a whole new backdrop for retailers and brands. Does the typical retail playbook still apply in this context? To what extent is retailing affected by changes in the macro-environment? To what extent does retail affect the macro-environment?
