The PDMA Handbook of New Product Development (4th edition)

Call for Proposals

Editors: Ludwig Bstieler and Charles Noble

The Product Development & Management Association (PDMA) is delighted to announce the launch of the 4th edition of the popular Handbook of New Product Development published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  This series has proved to be an essential guide for managers and scholars interested in the latest insights on successful new product development and related topics.  As with prior editions in the series, we seek contributions from skilled practitioners and leading scholars that can advance this topic and also provide a primer for those new to the field.

As currently envisioned, the book will include contributions from a range of authors, organized around six major topics:

  • Getting Started – New Product Development and Innovation
  • Organizing for New Product Development
  • Idea Generation and Opportunity Identification
  • Idea Screening/Analysis
  • Design Issues
  • New Product Launch

The editors of the Handbook (Ludwig Bstieler and Charles Noble) seek proposals for chapters to be included in this new edition.  The target audience for this book is experienced new product development practitioners who are grounded in the basics of new product development and are seeking new, practical knowledge to improve their NPD processes, and also academic researchers interested in a broad coverage of the area with deep dives into emerging, impactful topics.

The book chapters will likely take different forms, including thorough descriptions of an emerging tool or technique, rigorous research studies that are readable by a wide audience and/or reflections on the evolution of practice in various areas.  The Handbook is envisioned as approximately 30 chapters of approximately 15-20 pages each in final print form.  This equates to roughly 20-30 pages (inclusive) in double-spaced, manuscript form.  Each chapter should be built on a rigorous foundation of research and/or experience with value for all readers.

While we are open to any submissions on this general topic, suggested topics (chapters) for the book include:

* Factors driving successful new products

* Frameworks for innovation management

* Aligning business and product innovation strategy
