The advent and increasing use of automation in the marketplace affects consumers in two ways. First, marketing activities such as market research, segmentation, targeting, product design, pricing, communication, and distribution are increasingly being automated; this automation of marketing activities has profound effects on consumer behavior. Second, various aspects or types of consumption activities are also being automated; consider technology use in conducting household chores, measuring one’s biological characteristics, or self-driving cars. The JACR issue on Automation of Marketing and Consumption will target and encourage research that broadly examines these two themes.
