Last week the ANZMAC community were saddened to hear the passing of Emeritus Professor Roger Layton. As President of ANZMAC, I know I speak on behalf of all our members and marketing scholars across the region, in recognising the enormous contribution Roger made not only to the Academy but also to the development and extension of marketing knowledge and best practice for more than five decades.

In recognising his outstanding service, passion for life and research, I would also like to acknowledge his worldwide reputation especially in marketing systems theory and macromarketing. Not only has his research been published in leading international journals, he was also awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in June 1998. As well as Foundation President of the Australia and New Zealand Marketing Association, Roger played a leading role in setting up the Market Research Society of Australia and the Australian Institute of Export.

From the beginning, Roger took a broad view of marketing, not just as a business function but as a provisioning system in a society that played a key role in its development. This informed his research and teaching over the years right up to the end with his latest paper published this year in the Australasian Marketing Journal. With an international reputation as a leading scholar and the recipient of many research awards, his contributions will not only be remembered they will continue to be recognised and celebrated. For our ANZMAC community, the prestigious Roger Layton Dissertation Award will continue to be a fitting reminder of and tribute to our beloved colleague.
