Management Decision

Call for Papers for Special Issue on Management-Learning Case Writing, Discussion, and Impacts: Theory, Methods, and Practice

Deadline: 30 September 2013

Purpose of the Special Issue

The purpose of this Management Decision Special Issue is to explore the contribution that management-learning cases can make to theory, pedagogical methods, and business practice. Contrary to the popular belief that discussion cases are little more than story problems (Yin 2009), they can in fact be a source of discovery, not simply between instructor and student but by embracing researchers and case protagonists (Gill, 2011). The richness of discussion cases is a consequence of the ever more complex environments in which management decisions are made (Woodside, 2010). These cases can provide granular detail on the situation facing the decision-maker, with benefits for knowledge-building and relationship-building that go beyond the classroom.

Topics

The editors are seeking management case studies that have been developed for teaching purposes, research cases that are grounded in theory, and articles on the development and use of various genres of cases. Management cases should be accompanied by an appendix containing a teaching note. Suggested topics for management cases include, but are not limited to:

  • Green management / social responsibility
  • Cooperative firm strategies / strategic alliances
  • Organizational Change
  • Decisions to adopt innovation / pricing decisions
  • Strategies for introducing innovation

Papers on the development and use of cases might include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Innovations in case discussion methods and technologies
  • Assessment of case method learning outcomes
  • Conversion of research cases into discussion cases
  • Methods for generalizing from a single case
  • Achieving tight engagement with practitioners in the case writing process
  • Development and use of technology-augmented cases
