Dear Colleagues,
To celebrate the forthcoming publication of the inaugural issue of the Journal of Organizational Ethnography (JOE), Emerald is now inviting you to read the twelve pre-published papers of this issue…
The journal starts with what the Editors have called a “collective manifesto” written by authors who are engaged with issues at the heart of current ethnographic practice. The Editors challenged authors to express their vision or aspiration for this new endeavour, to stake out some of the terrain we should look to occupy as an outlet. Their hope for this “collective manifesto” is that it both launches the journal and provides a framework and inspiration to future authors by illustrating the diversity of approaches to ethnographic work, which will promote and broaden practice. Two examples of papers are:
"Making Organizational Ethnography" by Tony James Watson
Watson calls for greater recognition of what distinguishes ethnography from other qualitative modes of inquiry and greater acknowledgement of the potential practical value of ethnography for organizations.
“Being there, Teleography and The Wire” by Martin Parker
Parker traces the 19th Century anthropological tradition of doing secondary data-based ethnography, drawn from ‘travellers’ tales of faraway exotic lands, through to the way in which ethnographers today might make similar use of certain television programmes.
