Call for Proposals to Host 2013 AMA-Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium

The annual AMA-Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium is a premier event that holds a special place in the life and history of our discipline. If your school would like to host and sponsor this event in 2013, please prepare and submit a proposal for receipt no later than December 1, 2011.

The Consortium typically extends for 3½ days, arriving at the host university on Wednesday and departing on Sunday; potential host schools can propose alternative lengths or timing, within reason.

Proposals from individual universities based in North America have provided a rich history of exceptional consortia, over time, and will likely continue to represent the majority of proposals. However, as the discipline has grown, and in order to widen the pool of potential hosts, the Academic Council will consider innovative proposals that involve collaboration among two (or more) co-host institutions.

Examples would include partnerships such as two universities in close geographical proximity (with consortium activities across the two campuses) or a non-U.S. university and a U.S. university cosponsoring the event with both faculties co-hosting activities that are held on the U.S. campus.

Proposals for the AMA-Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium should include the following items:

  1. Cover Page that includes Chair (co-chairs) of Consortium and their contact information
  2. Objectives of Consortium
  3. Positioning/Theme of the Consortium
  4. Proposed Special Features of the Program
  5. Social Events and Experiences
  6. Overview of the proposed program
  7. Academic Environment and Facilities overview – information about University / School / Department and an overview of the specific facilities for housing, consortium sessions, etc.
  8. Support – an overview of how the host school will finance the event; an overview of interest shown by host school dean and/or administration
  9. Tentative Budget (Appendix)
  10. Biographical Sketches of departmental faculty

The AMA-Sheth Foundation Doctoral Consortium, typically held early summer, introduces Ph.D. students to state-of-the-art perspectives and involves students in discussion of emerging themes in our profession. Thought leaders in research and practice are invited to interact with and provide a stimulating experience for doctoral candidates as they prepare to launch their careers. Life-long professional relationships often develop through the consortium experience.

The AMA provides $40,000 of support and the Sheth Foundation (through the AMA Foundation) provides an additional $20,000 to the selected host school in support of this program. Other traditional sponsors include the Marketing Science Institute and the Institute for the Study of Business Markets, although those sponsorships are negotiated by the host school on a year-by-year basis. The consortium host institution provides the meeting space and often secures additional sponsorship commitments from its own university and/or corporate sponsors, and uses a modest fee structure that permits it to meet projected costs for lodging, meals and any fees associated with meeting space (Academic Council approved raising this fee to $500 per student, as of August 2011). Other activities such as receptions and off-site events are at the discretion of the host institution.

More details are available in the document “So You Think You May Want to Host the Consortium” that is available on the AMA website or by contacting the President-elect of the Academic Council. You may also be interested in visiting the websites for recent consortia:
