Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School recently hosted a Thought Leadership Conference with the title "Emerging Perspectives on Marketing in a Multichannel and Multimedia Retailing Environment.” The conference was co-sponsored by Texas A&M’s Center for Retailing Studies and the Marketing Science Institute. Attendees consisted of both academics and senior executives. Rather than follow the traditional conference model where aspiring attendees submit papers before the conference, organizers Venky Shankar and Manjit Yadav invited the participants and organized them into seven teams, each with a different topic. During the first full day of the conference, these seven teams each worked on their topics and produced an initial “position presentation.” The presentations were then made on the last day of the conference, with all teams commenting on each of the presentations.
The conference in this sense was truly interactive. Over the next several months these presentations will be developed further into articles for a special issue of the Journal of Interactive Marketing that will be published in 2010.
