Please note that registrations for Google’s global academic competition, the Google Online Marketing Challenge, close on 23 January.

For those of you registered, about 300 professors from 50+ countries have signed up almost 12000 students. For those of you not yet registered, please consider giving your students a compelling learning experience and maybe a week’s holiday, for you and the students, at a five star hotel in San Francisco. Part of your holiday includes a day at the nearby Googleplex, to meet the team behind AdWords.

Here’s how the Challenge works: Your students will receive US$ 200 in Google ads to drive traffic to a business website of their choosing. Students will compete with groups from their institution along with student teams from all over the world.

This is not a simulation; students gain real-world experience with a real client. You have a great student project; clients gain free advertising and Internet consulting. Google provides US $200 in vouchers, teaching materials and other resources. This Journal of Interactive Advertising article gives you hints on how to be competitive in the Challenge. http://jiad.org/article109

A survey of participating instructors showed that 96% would recommend the Challenge to other instructors, and the same percentage would run the Challenge in a future class. The Challenge is open to undergraduate and graduate students anywhere in the world, details at http://www.google.com/onlinechallenge/.
