Overview of the Discipline of Marketing

The Discipline of Marketing has recently experienced a remarkable period of growth and success and is now at the forefront of teaching and research activity in the field in Australia. The development has allowed the Discipline to embrace a greater diversity in its undertakings and to provide an increased range of opportunity across the spectrum for the analytical and creative academic. There are currently 2 Professors in the Discipline and a total core academic staff of 18 people. The Discipline of Marketing values the highest standard of scholarship in all research and teaching initiatives. It also facilitates connection with the career context in which its graduates will work through engagement with a Discipline Advisory Board. The Board comprises leading practitioners who enable development in the currency and relevance of the curriculum and significant opportunities to embed the learning experience of students in real-world challenges and issues.

Research focus

Research within the Discipline embraces multiple research methodologies and paradigms to examine consumer decision making, judgment and purchase behaviour, consumer culture, marketing strategy, advertising and international marketing. In the past three years Discipline members have published in many of the top ten ranked international marketing journals including the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Marketing Science and the International Journal of Research in Marketing. Faculty members also serve on the editorial boards of several top journals such as Marketing Science, Journal of International Marketing, International Marketing Review, Journal of Advertising and Psychology and Marketing.

The critical mass and relevance of the Discipline?fs research capacity is also reflected in recent outstanding success in securing large research grants from the highly competitive national funding source, the Australian Research Council, and in substantial research consultancies undertaken with industry and government. The Discipline?fs international focus has been reinforced by the co-hosting of the Asia Pacific Association of Consumer Research conference in 2006 and the hosting of several internationally renowned scholars from premier universities in North America and Europe as Visitors in the past three years. In 2008, the Discipline looks to further strengthen its research position as the leader in research among marketing departments in the country and internationally. Selection Criteria

Applicants for the Associate Professor (Level D) should address the following essential criteria:

  • A PhD in Marketing or related field.
  • Evidence of high quality teaching with substantial experience, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and contributions to subject and program development.
  • An excellent research record including one or more publications in top ranked refereed international journals.
  • An active research program with significant potential for future publication.
  • Expertise in one or more of the major areas of Marketing.
  • Evidence of leadership skills and ability to foster excellence in research, teaching and policy development in the discipline.
  • Proven management skills and some administrative experience
  • Clear professional contributions and achievements within and outside the University environment (such as editorial board memberships of major Marketing journals).
  • Evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
  • Ability to motivate students
  • Ability to attract external research funding
  • A record of successful postgraduate supervision (in PhD / Masters by Research)

Applicants for the Senior Lecturer (Level C) should address the following essential criteria:

  • A PhD in Marketing or related field.
  • Evidence of recent high quality teaching with experience, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, and contributions to subject development.
  • A consistently good research record is looked for with the potential to publish in top ranked refereed international journals.
  • An active research program with significant potential for future publication.
  • Expertise in one or more of the major areas of Marketing.
  • Evidence of leadership skills
  • Clear professional contributions
  • Evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
  • Ability to motivate students

Desirable Criteria

  • Ability to attract external research funding

Remuneration Package

Associate Professor: Level D academic position: $125,247.32 to $137,852.90 p.a. (which includes a base salary

Associate Professor Level D $105,978.00 to $116,752.00p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

Senior Lecturer: Level C academic position: $104,160.68 to $119,995.19 p.a. (which includes a base salary Senior Lecturer Level C $88,017.00 to $101,489.00 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

Level of appointment will be based on qualifications and experience

For exceptional applicants, remuneration may be by negotiation.

Tenure

The position is full time, continuing employment, contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory confirmation period. New appointees may be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period.

Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
