This email is to let you know that the winner of the AMA Irwin McGraw Hill Educator Award has been selected. The winner is Dr. Leonard L. Berry of the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. Len is Distinguished Professor of Marketing, M. B. Zale Chair in Retailing and Marketing Leadership, and Professor of Humanities in Medicine, Texas A& M University.
A committee consisting of Barton A. Weitz, Dominique Hanssens, Kent B. Monroe, William L. Cron and Ruth N. Bolton (chair) were privileged to make the final selection from a distinguished group of candidates with nomination letters from the past three years. The decision was difficult because there are so many very talented and giving people in our profession. We evaluated nominees based on the criteria for the prize: (1) creativity/innovation, (2) teaching/mentoring, (3) research, (4) administration, (5) public service and (6) service to the profession.
Dr. Berry excels on all these dimensions, as his many accomplishment attest. However, the committee members especially praised his books for bridging the gap between marketing science and practice. His recent books include: Discovering the Soul of Service, On Great Service, Marketing Services: Competing Through Quality, and Delivering Quality Service. Dr. Berry has been identified as the most frequent contributor to the English-language services marketing literature in the world and his research is heavily cited by marketing academics worldwide. He is the founder of Texas A&M’s Center for Retailing Studies and served as its director from 1982 through June 2000. He is a former national president of the American Marketing Association.
