SHETH FOUNDATION/JOURNAL OF MARKETING AWARD
The recipients of the 2005 Sheth Foundation/Journal of Marketing Award, which is administered through the American Marketing Association Foundation, are Donna L. Hoffman and Thomas P. Novak for their article “Marketing in Hypermedia Computer-Mediated Environments: Conceptual Foundations,” which appeared in the July 1996 (Vol. 60, No. 3) issue of the Journal of Marketing.
Nominations for the award were solicited from members of the JM Editorial Review Board, and a selection committee of prior editors of AMA journals made the final selection. In selecting the article, the selection committee observed that Hoffman and Novak’s pioneering article has been widely cited in the academic literature and has had an important and lasting influence on marketing. As one of the letters of nomination noted, the article “offered a clear and testable theoretical perspective, drawn from high impact work in motivational psychology.” Hoffman and Novak’s stream of work has substantially and significantly influenced the field of marketing by stimulating the development of theory, empirical research, and improvement in the practice of marketing.
The Sheth Foundation/Journal of Marketing Award, which was established through the generosity of the Sheth Foundation, honors articles published in the Journal of Marketing that have made long-term contributions to the discipline of marketing. The criteria for selection include the quality of the article’s contribution to theory and practice, the article’s originality, its technical competence, and its impact on the field of marketing. Articles eligible for the award must have been published at least five years but not more than ten years earlier.
