Martha Adams, Chief Creative Officer, Girl Rising

Martha Adams is an award-winning storyteller who travels freely between the commercial realm of TV, the independent world of filmmaking and all things digital media. Originally brought on to produce the film at the center of the Girl Rising campaign, she is now the Chief Creative Officer and was featured in 2013 by Newsweek/Daily Beast as one of “125 Women of Impact.” Adams is a Senior Fellow at The University of Southern California’s Marshall Brittingham Social Enterprise Lab which recognizes leadership at the intersection of business and social impact, she serves as a Film Expert for the U.S. Department of State diplomacy program American Film Showcase, and in 2015 Novus awarded her “Humanitarian of the Year.”

She has spent years working with the girls featured in Girl Rising and frequently speaks on the subject of girls' empowerment, radical change and the critical role storytelling plays. Recent engagements range from the FiSahara Film Festival and INmarket Conference to corporate events for Shearman and Sterling, Charles Schwab, Microsoft and Stroz Friedberg.

She began her career at Discovery Channel and after 5 years in production and programming, she co-founded Arcwelder Films. She executive produced a wide array of films, including four series and eight specials (including Inside the Kill Box, Citizen Soldier, Robots Rising and Spies Above) that won an array of awards including a National Emmy, Worldfest Houston prizes, New York Film Medals and Cine Awards. Audiences can enjoy her documentaries in more than 188 countries around the world, on networks such as Discovery, National Geographic, and Bravo. Martha graduated cum laude from American University in Washington D.C.


John Vranas, Chief Strategy Officer, Make-A-Wish International

John Vranas is the Chief Strategy Officer for Make-A-Wish International where he oversees the creation and execution of all global projects.  He serves as the leader and strategy advisor to the CEO and the International Board of Directors, working to ensure that the enterprise continues to expand globally and reach every child that is eligible for their one true wish.

John joined Make-A-Wish in 2014 as the Chief Marketing Officer for Make-A-Wish America.  He led the repositioning of the brand.  The new marketing strategy changed the wish story narrative to include greater storytelling, focusing on the need and impact of the 30,000 wishes granted around the world.  Those efforts led to record benchmark levels in recognition, equity, and favorability.  In combination with this repositioning, key strategic initiatives doubled the social media impact, while being a leader in social media engagement. In September 2016 he was promoted to the chief strategy role for Make-A-Wish International.

Before Make-A-Wish, John was Vice President of Fundraising for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Senior Vice President of Field Operations at ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.  He graduated from Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA with a B.S.B.A degree in Financial Management.  He currently lives in Phoenix AZ with his wife, Angi.

Make-A-Wish is a global organization, led by staff and volunteers in 51 countries, powered by the belief that we transform lives one wish at a time.


Lisa Sherman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ad Council

Lisa Sherman is President and CEO of the Ad Council, the national nonprofit organization behind some of the most impactful public service campaigns in American history. From the recent viral phenomenon “Love Has No Labels” to the iconic Smokey Bear, the Ad Council leverages the power of the media, leading creative and digital agencies and influencers to change opinions and behaviors around pressing social issues. Lisa oversees more than 40 integrated public service communications programs on behalf of national non-profit organizations and federal government agencies, including Autism Speaks, Feeding America, American Heart Association, FEMA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Lisa’s role at the Ad Council combines her extensive experience in molding and leading national communications companies with her strong passion for social causes. Lisa joined the Ad Council in November 2014, from Viacom where she helped to launch LogoTV, the leading entertainment network aimed at the LGBT community. During her time at Logo, she nearly tripled the number of households carrying the digital cable channel, built a robust advertising business of over 300 corporate brand partners and developed a multi-platform digital business that pioneered new approaches to audience building and engagement.

Prior to Logo, Lisa served as Executive Vice President at Hill, Holliday Connors, Cosmopulos, part of the Interpublic Group of Companies, and held a number of executive and senior level marketing, advertising and operating positions at Verizon Communications. During this time, she also co-founded the Women’s Sport Network, a marketing services company dedicated to the marketing and management of sports, entertainment and promotions for Fortune 500 companies to reach teens, women and families through their passion for sports.

Lisa is currently the Vice Chair of the Board of God’s Love We Deliver and serves on the Advisory board of TMI, the consulting arm of DoSomething.org which is the world’s largest organization for young people and social change. She has been recognized with a number of awards including Ad Age’s “Women to Watch 2015.” She is an inductee into the YWCA’s Academy of Women Leaders and a Metzger-Conway fellow at her alma mater, Dickinson College.

The reservation cut-off date is June 9, 2017.
The AMA has negotiated special group rates for the Nonprofit Marketing Conference. You must make your hotel reservations by June 9, 2017 and properly identify yourself to qualify for the special group rate (based on availability). After June 9, 2017, the rooms will be released for sale to the general public, and all reservations will be accepted on a space available basis at the hotel's available rate - not at the group rate. A credit card deposit or cash deposit in the amount of (1) one night’s room and tax for each confirmed room will be due at time of booking. Cancellations made within (72) seventy-two hours prior to arrival and no-shows will forfeit the initial deposit. If you fail to arrive on your confirmed arrival date, your entire reservation will be cancelled and your credit card will be charged for one night’s room and tax.

Check in time is 4:00 p.m., and check out is at 1:00 p.m. Anyone arriving earlier than 4:00 p.m. will be checked in as soon as a room(s) becomes available. Guests checking out early will be assessed an early departure fee of $109.50. Upon check in, guests will be asked to verify their departure date. At that time, scheduled departure dates may be altered.

Fairmont President’s Club
High Speed Internet access is available throughout the hotel when you join Fairmont President’s Club. Membership is complimentary and features exclusive privileges including free internet access, free local calls, complimentary health club access, daily newspaper and more. Conference attire is business casual. Meeting rooms tend to be cool, so you may wish to bring a sweater/jacket.

Driving Directions
From Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) - 5 miles/15 minutes
Exit the airport to the north. Follow the signs to Memorial Bridge.
Cross the Memorial Bridge and stay in the left lane.   
Take the first 'legal' left turn onto 23rd Street, NW. It is not marked at 23rd Street, but there is a left turn lane.   
Continue up to G Street and make a left turn.   
Go one block to the stop sign (this is 24th Street, NW) and turn right.   
Continue on 24th. You will cross M Street, NW.   
The hotel entrance is on the left.

From Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) - 26 miles/35 minutes
Take the Dulles Access Road to Route 66.   
Take Route 66 East toward Washington.   
Follow 66 over the Roosevelt Bridge. Stay in the left lane of the bridge and take the exit for E Street. The exit puts you at 20th Street, NW.   
At 20th Street, NW, make a left turn and follow to M Street, NW.
Make a left turn on M Street.   
Go four blocks and make a right on 24th Street, NW.   
The hotel entrance will be on the left.

From Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) - 35 miles/45 minutes
Exit the airport and take Route 195 (you will be on it) to Route 95.   
Take Route 95 South to 495 West (towards Silver Spring). This will put you on the Capital Beltway.   
Take Exit 33 (Connecticut Avenue, South) for approximately 6 miles.   
When you reach M Street, make a right turn.   
Continue almost eight blocks to 24th Street, NW and make another right, the hotel will be on the left-hand side of the street.

From the Dupont Circle Metro Station
Take the Circle South exit.   
Walk straight south on 19th Street, NW. 
Make a right turn on N Street, NW.
Continue to 24th Street, NW.
Make a left on 24th Street, NW. 
Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown is on the next corner on the right.
