How Do I Get Started? 

1. LEARN ABOUT THE EXAM

Review the skills you need to know to pass the AMA PCM® Sales Management certification exam by reviewing the Body of Knowledge​.​

2. EVALUATE YOUR SKILLS

Take the free practice exam​ (ama.org login requried) to assess your current marketing management skillset and identify areas of improvement. 

The AMA recommends that you have the following minimum level of education and/or experience before taking the certification exam. While this is not required at this time, you will want to consider these recommendations when deciding if you wish to pursue the PCM Sales Management certification. 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of professional marketing experience, or 
  • Master’s degree and 2 years of professional marketing experience, or 
  • 7 years of professional marketing experience 

3. STUDY FOR THE EXAM
 

While accomplished marketing professionals should have a good grasp of the content in this Body of Knowledge, the exam still requires preparation for most candidates. 

The AMA recommends Johnston and Marshall’s 5th Edition Contemporary Selling and 12th Edition Sales Force Management as resources for those preparing for the AMA PCM® Sales Management exam. 

The AMA does not require that individuals purchase or study from a specific source to be eligible for the exam. Also, the AMA does not guarantee a passing score on the exam for individuals who study from a specific source


4. TAKE THE EXAM

The exam consists of 100 questions and is administered online. You will have two hours to complete the exam. You are permitted to take breaks during the exam, but your time will not stop. 

You must receive an overall score ​of 80% or higher to pass the exam. It is not required that you achieve a specific score in each domain. You will receive your scores immediately after completing the exam, including a breakdown by domain. 

Your registration for the exam will include three exam attempts that must be completed within one year of registration. If you are unsuccessful in passing the exam, you must wait a minimum of 15 days between exam attempts. 

  • $249 for AMA members and $349 for non-members.

5. PROMOTE AND MAINTAIN YOUR CERTIFICATION

Once you have passed the exam and earned your certification, you can proudly display PCM behind your name, showing you have put in the work to master sales management. You will receive a digital certificate and badge image to display on your social media and to help promote yourself as a PCM. 

In order to remain current in the field of sales management, once you are certified you must maintain your certification through earning and reporting continuing education units (CEUs). You must earn 30 CEUs over your three year certification period, with a minimum of 10 CEUs in each year. Learn more​ about CEUs and recertification.
