The AMA Marketing Strategy SIG announced Prof. Rajdeep Grewal as the winner of the 2016 Mahajan Award for Lifetime Contributions to Marketing Strategy Research and Prof. Kapil R. Tuli as the winner of the 2016 Varadarajan Award for Early Career Contributions​ to Marketing Strategy Research. 

 A 1998 Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati, Professor Grewal is The Townsend Family Distinguished Professor of Marketing at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. Dr. Grewal previously served as the associate research director for the Institute for the Study of Business Markets.  

Dr. Grewal has made exceptional contributions on a variety of topics at the core of marketing strategy. He uses quantitative methods to theoretically and empirically examine a variety of phenomena ​​​​​such as social networks and social interactions, competitive strategy, and the role of marketing within an organization. His research has appeared in the leading marketing, strategy, and information systems journals and it has been recognized with multiple awards including the 2013 Donald R. Lehmann Award and the 2012 Louis W. Stern Award. He currently serves as an area editor of the Journal of Marketing and he will begin his terms as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Marketing Research​ in July. 

Kapil earned his PhD in Marketing from Emory University in 2006 and is currently an Associate Professor of Marketing at Singapore Management University. His research focuses on the development and delivery of customer services, the dynamics of customer-firm relationships, and the impact of marketing activities on shareholder value. His research has been published in a variety of leading marketing and management journals, including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, and Journal of Retailing, and has won several research awards, including the ISBM Business Marketing Doctoral Support Award. In addition, one of his papers was a finalist for the Harold Maynard Award. He also serves as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, International Journal of Research in Marketing, and Journal of Service Research. In addition, he is regularly recognized as one of SMU's best teachers.

Each award was selected by a three member panel of past award winners.​

Previous winners of the Mahajan award include: David Aaker, George Day, David Montgomery, Rajan Varadarajan, Rajendra Srivastava, Frederick Webster, Gerry Tellis, V. Kumar, Christine Moorman, Ajay Kohli, Roland T. Rust, Stanley F. Slater, Venkatesh Shanker, Dominique Hanssens, Leigh McAlister, and Bernie Jaworski.
